What is Periodic Limb Movement Disorder?
Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) is a condition in which a person's legs twitch or jerk uncontrollably in sleep. These movements can cause repeated awakenings that disturb sleep and lead to daytime fatigue and sleepiness.
PLMD can occur at any age; however, it is more common in middle-aged and older people.
Who is at risk for PLMD?
- PLMD is often linked with restless legs syndrome, and at least 80% of people with restless legs syndrome have PLMD. PLMD also increases in people who have sleep apnea and narcolepsy.
- PLMs tend to be exacerbated by medications, such as certain antidepressants, stress, excessive amount of alcohol consumption, particularly close to bedtime and sleep deprivation.
What is the treatment for PLMD?
PLMD is often treated with anti-Parkinson medication. It may also respond to anticonvulsants, benzodiazepines, and narcotics. Patients must stay on these medications in order to experience relief, because there is no known cure for this disorder. It is also advised not to consume caffeine, alcohol, or to take antidepressants as these substances could worsen the PLMD symptoms.
